A Career in PSB brings in both Happiness and Meaning to your Life

by

Kalyanam Rajagopal

This is not just my own story. This write up tries to connect thousands of Public Sector Bankers who serve(ed) the nation with a sense of belongingness and ownership.

When I joined Andhra Bank, scarcely did I know that my stint in the PSB would bring in Happiness and Meaning to my life. The acclaimed thriller "The Interpretation of Murder" written by Prof. Jen Ruben Field, a law professor of Yale University, claims that one can have either Happiness or Meaning in life, but not both. Quoting from a Chapter in the above book "In Pursuit of Happiness and Meaning in Life" Sri L K Advani says that by joining RSS "I have chosen meaning. But I have had the good fortune of experiencing both(Happiness and meaning)". With greater humility, I say that I had no such choices of choosing between meaning and happiness in life. Yet I was happy to find both Meaning and Happiness in life by working for a Public Sector Andhra Bank.

Like every human being, I too had my own share of trials and tribulations in life, but in my pursuit of Happiness and Meaning in life, those difficulties were no impediments at all in my bank life. My initial salary was Rs.700/-p.m. which was Rs.180/- more than that I was drawing earlier. My memories of entry in the Bank are still green. I was past 25 years of age in 1980 with 5 years of experience as a steno in an ecumenical organization. When I had exhausted all my three attempts for Civils, my dear wife, a teacher, brought a piece of notification of Banking Service Recruitment Board(BSRB), Southern Region. It was Hobson's choice for me as I would have no such offers later. So, her will prevailed over mine. Andhra Bank was not in that notification, but included later. In May 1981 , when I was allotted to Andhra Bank our family was happy . For me, it was a moment of pride too.

Then with an eye on securing a placement in and around Nellore, where my wife was working, I headed to Hyderabad by train in an unreserved compartment. With excitement and enthusiasm , I met the Staff Manager in the iconic Central Office building in Koti. His considerate remark "with a good intention to help, I penned down your details " indicated that objective of my visit was fulfilled. I joined in Regional Office, Nellore on 08.7.1981. I completed MA in Economics (majoring in Development Banking) in 1986 . In 1987, I became a Certified Associate of IIB. I used to be thorough with HO Circulars. I updated myself with the readings of Commerce, Economic Times, Business Lines, IIB Journals and RBI Credit Information Review. With a sense of pride I say that my rural back ground was found to be an inherent advantage to understand the needs of farmers, rural and urban poor. I was exposed to work in rural, semi-urban, urban and metro branches, in Regional Office and HO as a clerk, an officer and Manager. I was fortunate to gain the confidence of my colleagues and superiors. While meeting the basic needs of our clientele/staff, minor deviations (no violations at all ) of procedures, which were not against the interest of the Bank, did not matter me . My concern for my colleagues drew me to trade union. I had the opportunity of witnessing and participating in my Bank in landmark happenings like IPO/FPO, Computerization of Bank and revolutionary changes in the lending policies and practices that helped farmers, poor , indigent ,small and Medium Enterprises. Some of my colleagues became my best friends. My work place provided an opportunity to interact with men of eminence who make news and public spirited citizens

Every reasonable need of my family was taken care of by my Bank. As Inspector of Branches, I got opportunity to see the length and breadth of my country and to have a feel of the rich and varied culture. My work life in Bank made me believe that Public Sector Banks are no mere lenders or dealers in Finance or Money but Leaders in Development; I learnt that in no other part of free world, growth is led by banks; Bank led growth happened only in my mother-land. That alone made me feel proud of my association with Public sector bank. When personal priorities took precedence over my loved career, I had "resigned" on 18.7.2009, foregoing happily a remuneration of Rs 6,00,000/- p.a

In the pleasant evening of my life, now I cherish my life in Bank with immense satisfaction that I played my part not only as an employee and but also as a stake holder in Public Sector Bank to the best of my ability to realize the objectives of nationalization. For a bare-foot banker, Banking is not just his breadwinner, but a vibrant means and opportunity to change lives of underprivileged. Young Public Sector Banker, Let not the ills plaguing the system/society affect your zeal and goal. Your positive attitude can make a big difference not only to your life but also to the society at large.

I dedicate this write-up to all my ex-colleague bankers( especially to the late Mr.Rajesh Goyal, a public spirited person) who did their job with a missionary zeal and to all incumbent bankers who are following them.
